In Perspective – Black and White Photographs from the Harz

In Perspective is a small series of black and white photographs taken in the Harz mountains in 2022.

The images were captured with a mirrorless Canon camera. The focus is less on classic landscape views and more on perspective, light, structure, and the question of what is truly important in the image.

THE SERIES

When color is not necessary.

The Harz mountains offer many subjects that initially stand out for their landscape, forests, and vastness. However, in these shots, I was primarily interested in shapes, lines, contrasts, and unusual viewpoints.

Black and white reduces an image to precisely these elements. Color recedes, allowing light, shadow, structure, and composition to come more strongly to the fore.

Sometimes a subject doesn't change by what you photograph, but by where you view it from.

THE VIEWPOINT

Perspective as part of the story.

For me, the name In Perspective describes more than just a photographic technique. It also represents the way to give a seemingly everyday motif a different view.

A railing can suddenly become a graphic structure through its shadow. A single tree gains a completely different presence due to a lot of empty space. A forest path under a bridge can appear more like a question than a landscape.

It is precisely such situations that interest me in photography: motifs that only achieve their true effect through framing, distance, and perspective.

FOUR SHOTS

Each image tells a different story.

PARTY OF ONE. focuses on a single tree that clearly stands out from its surroundings. A lot of open sky reinforces the feeling of distance and independence.

KEEP IT IN PERSPECTIVE. thrives on lines, railings, and long shadows. The actual subject becomes almost abstract and shows how strongly a perspective can change an ordinary place.

ENLIGHTENMENT. shows an open forest area with remaining tree stumps and individual trees. A landscape between change, intervention, and new light.

YOU FIRST. guides the eye over a forest path under an old bridge. The scene appears calm, almost a little uncertain – as if someone has to take the first step.

WHY ENGLISH TITLES?

A second thought about the image.

The short English titles are not meant to fully explain the photographs. They merely provide a direction and leave enough room for individual interpretation.

A little ambiguity may also arise. Keep it in Perspective, for example, refers to both photographic perspective and the admonition to view things in their proper context.

THE HARZ 2022

A landscape in transition.

All photographs in the series were taken in the Harz mountains in 2022. Especially there, beauty and change often lay directly side by side at that time: dense forest, open spaces, old paths, structures, and visible traces of change.

For me, it wasn't about fully documenting the Harz. Rather, the camera became a tool to extract individual situations and give them their own tranquility through black and white, framing, and perspective.

In Perspective is a series about looking closely. Four photographs, taken in the Harz mountains in 2022, which not only show landscapes, but also distance, light, lines, and different ways of looking at the same world.
