Petites Escales – France Memories Beyond the Usual Souvenirs

Some places from a journey remain in memory for an astonishingly long time.
This is exactly how Petites Escales came to be: a small series of cups featuring French cities and destinations that I often hear about in conversations with people who have traveled to France.
Because a beautiful vacation memory doesn't always have to be the Eiffel Tower, a lavender field, or a typical souvenir.
THE IDEA BEHIND IT
Why these particular places?
When people talk about their travels through France, certain places are mentioned strikingly often. Annecy, Saint-Malo, Dinan, Avignon, Chamonix, Marseille, or Lyon are very different – and yet they have something in common: they stick in your memory.
Sometimes it's a famous landmark. Much more often, however, it's a particular alley, a harbor, a bridge, the view of the mountains, or simply the atmosphere of a vacation day.
MEMORY INSTEAD OF CLICHÉ
A piece of France can be more personal.
Classic souvenirs are part of traveling and have their own charm. However, I was attracted by the idea of making memories of a specific place a little more subtle and individual.
For example, anyone who has walked through the alleys of Dinan, stood by the water in Annecy, or experienced the walls of Saint-Malo usually associates a very personal story with that place.
Exactly this memory should be the focus – not a general symbol for France, but the place itself.
THE ILLUSTRATIONS
Like small sketches from a travel diary.
The motifs are deliberately light and reduced. Fine lines meet transparent watercolor paints, while large areas of the light paper remain visible.
Buildings, landscapes, and striking views should be recognizable without looking like a classic souvenir print.
This creates for me a visual language that is more reminiscent of a travel sketch made on the go: not every detail is explained, but enough remains to rediscover a familiar place.
PETITES ESCALES
Small stops, big memories.
The French name Petites Escales can be loosely translated as "small stopovers." This precisely describes the idea of the series: places where you stop during a journey and which sometimes remain in memory much longer than expected.
Therefore, the collection is deliberately not complete. New places may be added – especially those that travelers talk about again and again or that have a very unique atmosphere.
A SMALL JOURNEY THROUGH FRANCE
From the Alps to the Atlantic coast.
Annecy and Chamonix tell of mountains and clear alpine air. Saint-Malo, Brest, and Dinan lead to Brittany. Avignon is reminiscent of Provence, Marseille of the Mediterranean, and Lyon of one of France's great historic cities.
Thus, not a complete map is gradually created, but a collection of personal travel destinations.
