Kyoto — where time seems to slow down
Kyoto wears its history not like a museum, but like something self-evident. Temple roofs rise between trees, narrow alleys lead past old wooden houses, and in spring, cherry blossoms cast an almost floating hue over the city.
The illustration captures this quieter Japan and condenses various impressions of Kyoto into a single, open scene: architecture, mountains, water, and blossoms combine to form a cityscape that thrives less on speed and more on rhythm.
Wood, Stone and Blossoms
A multi-story pagoda forms the vertical center of the motif. Behind it lie wooded slopes and temple complexes, while in the foreground, traditional houses, paths, and a small bridge weave through the composition.
Warm wood and sand tones meet restrained green, pale blue, and delicate rosé. The architecture remains detailed without appearing heavy. In between, bright areas repeatedly open up, giving the scene peace and space.
Sakura & Steel
In the "Sakura & Steel" series, Japanese locations meet two different forces. "Sakura" stands for nature, atmosphere, color, and the subtle transitions in which a motif appears soft and almost fleeting.
"Steel" does not only mean modern architecture. It also stands for structure, line, and construction. In Kyoto, this aspect is revealed more subtly: in roof shapes, wooden frameworks, bridges, and the precise rhythm of traditional architecture.
Sakura
Cherry blossoms, water and transparent rosé tones give the motif its soft, poetic and almost floating quality.
Steel
Pagoda, temple roofs, bridges, and clear building lines bring order, structure, and architectural tension to the illustration.
The K as a free ink gesture
To the left of the cityscape, the large "K" stands like a strong, spontaneously placed brushstroke. The ink remains transparent, irregular, and visibly vibrant – not as clean typography, but as a gestural trace.
Precisely next to the delicate architecture, this free form appears particularly strong. The city is ordered, the ink remains open. This creates the balance that characterizes the visual language of "Sakura & Steel."
A drawn memory of Kyoto
This illustration shows Kyoto not as a collection of individual sights, but as an atmosphere: wood, blossoms, mountains, roofs, and quiet paths. A motif for people who particularly love Japan where history and everyday life naturally coexist.
