Bell Rock – a structure against the surf
The Bell Rock Lighthouse rises on a reef off Scotland's east coast near Arbroath. Because the rock is mostly underwater at high tide, its construction was an extraordinary engineering challenge. With the significant involvement of engineer Robert Stevenson, a lighthouse was created whose light first shone in 1811 – and which to this day is considered an impressive example of historic lighthouse architecture.
